HBO Boxing After Dark: Urango vs Berto

It was to be the typical bout which would match the boxer vs. the brawler. The latter being brought to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in the form of Juan Urango
(21-1-1, 16 KO’s) and the former being undefeated Winterhaven, Fl native Andre Berto (24-0, 19 KO’s).

The question has been asked time and time again as to whether the boxer of great skill can defeat the brawler who can end the fight with one punch if located. That question was answered tonight.

For Berto, the lights will be bright as a good showing and victory on this HBO card would ensure an upcoming bout with “Sugar” Shane Mosley, whom he has ironically been likened too. For Urango, a victory over the Berto would give the reigning IBF Junior Welterweight Champ a claim to the WBC World Welterweight Title.

When asked his thoughts on the outcome of the fight, Urango said, “I’m preparing myself for twelve rounds, if a knockout comes before then, then great, but if not I’m ready to go twelve rounds.”

As the combatants entered the ring it was clear that both were in fighting shape, and yet Berto looked more prepared, more focused, and all around more impressive.

The battle would start as a grab-fest. Both fighters seemed more than content to hold more than to punch, however, it was clear from the beginning that Bertos’ speed was an overpowering match to the punches he was not allowing Urango to throw.

Early in the third round Urango would seemingly slip and go down, only to get back up and continue in a round he would eventually lose.

Although very confident in himself prior to the fight it would appear Urango was completely outclassed by a superior pugilist in the ring. It was a supremely hard hitting contest that would conclude with a unanimous decision of Andre Berto remaining the undefeated champion by a score of 117-111, and 118-110 twice.

In the Co- Main Event bout Kermit Cintron (30-2-1, 27 KO’s) took on Alfredo Angulo (12-0, 12 KO’s). Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo, a native of Mexicali, Mexico, came to Hollywood complete with his own Mariachi band in tow.

Early in the fight Angulo would prove to be a tough opponent for the seasoned Cintron. Several blows to the face would land allowing “El Perro to establish himself.

Cintron would fight back in powerful fashion landing strong uppercuts and jabbing his opponent with lefts and rights. The crowd would prove to be behind the former inhabitant of Carolina, Puerto Rico by providing him with chants of “Boricua, Boricua” .

In the end it would be a victory for Cintron, the fight would go to the scorecards for a decision. After a grueling 12 rounds the judges would come to a unanimous decision as all three would score the fight 116-112, handing Angulo his first loss.

When asked his thoughts on the victory by Kermit Cintron, Promoter Lou Dibella said, “Kermit Cintron has always been one of the most talented fighters in the world, but tonight is the night he put it all together. He boxed brilliantly against a never say die warrior.”
