If ever there was a year for the UCF Knights to dream big, this is it. This is their first test against the University of Miami and it couldn’t have come at a better time. This is not the Hurricane team that its Miami faithful are used to seeing. They are seemingly struggling to keep their head above water, (literally if you saw the FSU game).While difficult to pinpoint one specific flaw with this team, this much is evident, the Hurricanes are plagued by injuries to the few veterans they have on this team, and are also in a coaching rut as the fans are weekly, calling for the job of Randy Shannon.
While it is possible to blame Shannon for an ineffective scheme of plays, this much is true. He has yet to get a full recruiting class of his own, and while affable, Larry Coker was not a recruiting genius. This is not a grass roots attempt to excuse the 0-2 conference record with a mark of 2-3 overall.
Enter UCF, who is not having as magical a season as they had last season. After losing Kevin Smith to the NFL, the Knights have had trouble getting things going on the ground. They are coming into this game with an equally abysmal 1-1 conference record with a matching 2-3 overall.
The Hurricanes will also be missing three veteran leaders in the form of senior defensive-end Eric Moncur, senior right tackle Reggie Youngblood, and junior linebacker Colin McCarthy. Essentially these injuries make an already young team even younger.
With all these things said, these are two fairly matched teams, in talent if not in name. Both teams are hungry to prove that they are not as dreadful as their records indicate.
It remains to be seen what will happen after the kickoff today at 3:45pm. One team is looking to regain in their new home the magic that seemed to come naturally in their old residence; the other, is looking to show the world they are ready to compete on the national stage with the big boys of the BCS.
It is said that will triumphs over talent, the question is, on which sideline is which attribute?
